today i am a sleepwalker

oh man, i'm exhausted.  it has been a really big week for me.  you know those times when you feel like you would happily trade a kidney for some much needed rest.  i'm having one of those times.  i had a mini-sobbing break while i was getting ready for my class this morning.  so instead of showering and getting looking presentable, i just sat and cried.  so today, i'm exhausted, my hair is greasy, my eyes are stinging, and i have the prospect of another long work weekend.  it's not great.

on a happy note, i'm having a movie party with my awesome aunt and some of my cousins tomorrow night.  i also got a new job up here in logan!  so things are looking up.  i just need some major sleep. and maybe a spa day.

this is how i feel today.

today i am a quiet observer

today i had my first elementary school observation.  it was so fun.  i observed a class of third graders at an elementary school here on campus.

there were lots of happy little moments, but my favorite came while the kids were learning spanish.  they learned how to say romance in spanish, and the teacher asked them "what is romance?"  one little boy immediately raised his hand and said, "romance is when two people fall in love and they kiss!"  this was followed by all sorts of moaning and various gagging noises from the rest of the class.  several more students had answers to the question, but my other favorite was, "romance is when you can't stop thinking about someone." my heart melted.

in other news, i dare you to not burst out in manic fits of laughter at this little treasure.

today i am a terrible blogger

i haven't posted in much longer than anticipated.  my goal of trying to post every day or every other day came to a sudden halt this week.  mostly because i was busy.  i drove back down to lovely salt lake on wednesday morning to see my little brother as the lead in his school play.  he was the best fifth grade shakesperean actor ever.

my cousin is a first grade teacher, and i went and helped with her class on thursday.  they were adorable.  when they came in from recess, one of the little boys handed me a chunk of rock salt and said, "it's a crystal". i fell in love. i also got my hair colored that night.  it went from light blonde to a warm auburny-brown.  love.

yesterday, i went to lunch with my fantastic former roomie, brittany.  we went to the blue lemon in alpine and had a ton of fun.  if you haven't tried that place yet, do it.  right now.

and today and tomorrow i get to work twelve hour shifts at my exhausting, yet rewarding job.  so that's pretty much my life.  how is your weekend?

today i am a laundry maid

Tyrone Wells- Happy as the Sun

i am so in love with today!  it is absolutely gorgeous outside.

january is usually my least favorite month of the year because it's freezing and dreary and smoggy.  your whole self is frozen and you only have a vague recollection of what the sun looks like.

until today.

today it is a winter miracle.  the sun is shining!  the skies are blue!  i was completely comfortable outside, and felt a great urge to take my coat off and frolick around campus in joy.  i love the sun!  it feels like spring time (even though i am, unfortunately, aware it's not yet).  i now have to go do my laundry, and i'm so ecstatic today that i don't even care.  hallelujah!

p.s. i dare you to listen to the song above and not be in a better mood.  it's impossible.

today i am a student

i loved my morning class today.  loved.  the class is at 7:30 am, which means i have to be out waiting for the shuttle by 7.  so this morning when my alarm went off, i thought about crying, then about throwing it out the window, then about ignoring it and continuing to sleep.  ultimately, i didn't do any of these.  i got up, got ready, and went to class.

and i loved it.  it's my intro to elementary education class, and we were discussing the role a teacher plays in the students' lives.  i had such a strong feeling that this is right for me.  i am so excited for that class, and for this profession, and for everything.  hooray!

oh, and did i mention it wasn't even that cold this morning too?  the temperature was probably in the double digits! holla! this is kind of how i feel today....

awkward and awesome thursday

hey friends, it's thursday!  this means, according to sydney over at the daybook, that we all get to compile our list of awkard and awesomes for the week.  so here we go!

awkward

- when the shuttle you're taking home stops in front of your apartment complex, and you're so tired you don't notice.  so the shuttle driver has to remind you that you are, in fact, at your stop.
- when you are waiting in line to get on the shuttle, and a guy falls into a complete sitting position as he's getting off.  and you turn around and notice everyone in line has their face turned away so the poor man doesn't see us all silently laughing at him.
- when you see someone you know on campus, so you talk to each other as you're walking toward each other.  so then, instead of stopping to talk for a moment, you both continue walking in opposite directions as you have your conversation.  so you both end up walking backwards away from each other, yelling the last few sentences.  why do we do this?
- when you totally slip on the ice.  even if you don't fall, you feel like an idiot because your foot just slid across the ground, your arms are waving wildly as you try to balance yourself, and you inevitably let out some sort of squeal.  then as you try to quietly slink away, you have to move painfully slowly so you don't have another ice mishap.
- when you realize you are learning to play the recorder in your class.  that's all you are going to do in that class.  in a college class.  the recorder.  really?

awesome

- when you're sitting in class, realizing you absolutely made the right decision to change your major.
- when you listen to a professor speak and you feel excited about the lesson.  i love that feeling when the whole class is just completely on the same page, and you're all just enthralled with the subject.
- when your amazing sister and brother come visit you at school just because they miss you.  and they bring you the most delicious, best decorated sugar cookies in the world.
- when you meet a lot of new people and have fun with them right away.
- when the clothes you chose to wear that day actually protect you from the cold.  it's so awesome to not be shivering constantly when you're outside.

I hope you guys liked this awkward and awesome list!  head over to the daybook to check out more lists and to read the awesome posts by sydney.

today i am a singer

sometimes i forget how much i love to just belt out the tunes.  today i was feeling particularly musical when i got home from class, so i ran to my computer and started singing my favorite broadway songs.  i ran through the list for about an hour, and i am feeling so much better.
it's amazing how much i am able to express and vent through music.  it's really one of the most amazing outlets for any pent up emotions.  that's why singing in the shower feels so great.  i love it!
in other news, my sister and brother came up to visit yesterday and helped me hang my pictures on the wall.  it was so good to see them and i love having the room decorated...finally.
also, i found this video a few weeks ago and i have been madly in love with it ever since.  the concept is brilliant and beautiful.  i love the use of the shadows, smoke, and water in the movement.  it's absolutely phenomenal.  i hope you guys love it too!

today i am a writer

i've decided to undergo yet another change for this blog. it has been my goal for over a year now to post regularly on my blog as a way to keep a journal, and keep family and friends updated. i haven't met that goal. i've been reading a lot of blogs lately and have discovered what i need is a good theme.
i have always been fascinated by the different roles we all step into every day. in one day, a girl like me can step into the role of student, writer, chef, friend, employee, sister, daughter, hiker, swimmer, skiier, and a thousand other things depending on what she's doing.
so i'm going report on my life and adventures by posting about what role i stepped into that day. hopefully this theme will stick, and will get me motivated to write down my experiences for myself, and for whoever happens to read my posts.
